What is VolunTeaching / VolunTeacher?

VolunTeaching simply means Voluntary Teaching. So a VolunTeacher is a person who is committed to spending at least one day every week for nation by teaching the village children in need of education

Where is it done?

VolunTeaching was started in Paldi Kankaj village in Dascroi taluka of Ahmedabad district, in addition to that it is also functional in Mulsan, Gilosan, Nugar (all in Mehsana taluka & district), Lanva, Dharpuri (both in Chanasma taluka of Patan district), Rampura, Dharusana (both in Mehsana taluka & district) and Miroli (Dascroi taluka of Ahmedabad district) villages.

Which subjects do you teach?

VolunTeaching is an enrichment pedagogy built around character building. VolunTeachers do not teach the school syllabus, they rather work on the fundamental aspects of literacy and work towards igniting the interest for studies among the kids and sensitize them about their family, their community, their village and ultimately the nation.

Which NGO is doing this?

VolunTeaching is not the copyright of any NGO. VolunTeaching is an enrichment pedagogy complementary to contemporary education. It is a people’s movement with a definite framework which can be adopted by any individual, any institution or any organization.

How do you raise funds?

AIREP (Paldi Kankaj) has several well-wishers (individuals) who support and raise the resources for VolunTeaching in Paldi Kankaj.

GVM and NVM are funded by Ganpat University and Institute of Technology, NIRMA University.

VolunTeachers are prohibited from raising funds without the need. Supporters are encouraged to contribute by offering the items (materials) and not money as and when possible.

When and where was it started?

VolunTeaching began in April 2008 in Paldi Kankaj village.

How is it different from any other NGO teaching in the slum?

  • VolunTeaching is no NGO, it is a methodology which can be adopted by anyone who wants to empower Indian villages through Education, Vocation and Healthcare
  • VolunTeaching is a consistent effort (3 days a week in Paldi Kankaj and once a week in the rest of the villages)
  • VolunTeaching is a long lasting effort (at least 10 years in any village)
  • VolunTeaching is not just an academic effort, it takes care of holistic development of the child with character building as the central thought
  • VolunTeaching content is designed for villages and not slums

How much education is needed to become a VolunTeacher?

Basic literacy is all you need. (No kidding! If you can read this, you can most certainly become a VolunTeacher)

However, the level of your comfort with the kids and their comfort with you holds the key to how good a VolunTeacher you can be.

I don’t understand Gujarati, can I become a VolunTeacher?

Language is no barrier, interns from Japan, China, Europe and Africa have also taught the children in our villages.
